BINTULU (Dec 2): Development and environmental sustainability must move in tandem to ensure that every development programme implemented also covers biodiversity aspects, said Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said environmental sustainability is always close to the hearts of the community who are very concerned about the well-being and safety of the surrounding where they live and earn their livelihood.

“Therefore, the initiatives carried out by all parties consisting of various groups and backgrounds have provided awareness among the community to act in protecting the environment,” he said.

He said this in his address at the Bintulu Sustainability Award (BiSA) 2024 ceremony and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) meeting here today.

Penguang stressed that continued efforts will help in fostering a culture of environmental stewardship while reminding all parties that every small action will contribute to a greater impact.

“In pursuing sustainability, we must recognise the three main pillars; namely economic, social and governance, which emphasise the need to balance and integrate economic prosperity, social wellbeing, environmental health and governance to achieve long-term sustainability and create a resilient and thriving future,” he said.

He added that all Sarawakians must maintain the sustainability of natural resources and be responsible for ensuring that they continue to be preserved for future generations.

“It is an honour for me to stand before you all today to celebrate and recognise the extraordinary efforts and achievements in maintaining sustainability in Bintulu.”

He noted that Bintulu has emerged as a symbol of progress and innovation, not only in economic development but also in collective commitment towards sustainability in recent years.

“As the world faces pressing challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation, it is important that all parties continue to unite to pave the way towards a more sustainable future.
